Major-General Sir George Charles D’Aguilar KCB (1784-1855), British Army officer, Artist & Lieutenant Governor of Hong Kong.


In 1799 D’Aguilar joined the 86th Regiment of Foot in the East Indies. He saw action in various campaigns including Bharatpur. Later assistant adjutant-general in Sicily & was sent to the court of Ali Pasha at Constantinople. Also served under Sir John Murray in Spain. In 1813 appointed a major in the Greek Light Infantry & in 1815 joined the Duke of Wellington during the capture of Paris. Promoted to Major-General in 1841.
In 1843 D’Aguilar was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Hong Kong & lived at Flagstaff House in Hong Kong Park.
D’Aguilar was an accomplished amateur artist. He painted throughout his career & built an impressive archive of documentary works which are of great historical interest. His paintings of China are especially prized.
